The Devon town of Crediton, on the River Creedy, is located on the main Exeter to Barnstaple road some 7 miles north west of Exeter. Saint Boniface was born there in about 672 and later went on to become the patron saint of Germany. Despite being close to Exeter the town organised races for the first time on Tuesday 13th September 1842 when staged at the Hollacombe estate owned by Mr Tremlett. The course spread between Hollacombe, Westwood and Chapel Downs Farm. The 2 day meeting was brought to a close with a splendid meal provided by Messrs Killis and Brown. Meetings continued to be held under rules until Wednesday 22nd September 1880, although racing did continue in the early part of the 20th century when annual meetings took place outside the rules of racing.
